Their learning stamina is longer, especially when there is more ‘carpet time’ during literacy. Little learners tend to be early risers and are more ‘fresh’ in the morning. The students are invited to identify the day. On the morning of, I will either have their alarm set or wake. This informal chat is usually followed by an activity to get them moving, such as a song or a dance. Do the routine a few times I take one evening before bed to find the perfect spot in their room. For example, on Mondays, the teacher might ask the children to tell everyone what they did over the weekend. Since my biggest academic block is literacy, I choose to have that block at the beginning of our school day. The day often begins with a short discussion time. Line the children up and have them walk through a speedy daily schedule, such as the morning meeting, science, writing, math, art class and social studies. I make my academic schedule before the first day of school, so depending on the make-up and dynamics of my class, I have permission to change and do what is best for my students! I will add that I always try and do what is best for my students and class. A transition would be any time students are. Partly from experience, and partly through learning about our new class each year, we create routines around student work (eg., Alphabet Books), student activities (Meeting Time, Centres) and any transitions in our class.
